Solar Eclipse Viewing on Campus

Community College of Denver’s Astronomy Department will set up two telescopes on the Auraria Campus near the Confluence Building. Safety viewing glasses will be provided. Join us!

On August 21, 2017, a total solar eclipse will cross the continental United States from Salem, Oregon to Charleston, South Carolina. This is the first time a total solar eclipse will cross coast-to-coast since 1918. Denver will experience a 93% partial eclipse of the sun.

The Eclipse starts 10:24 a.m., peaks 11:47 a.m., ends 1:16 p.m. Safety viewing glasses will be provided.

Protective Eyewear Notification

The American Astronomy Society has revised its safety advice due to the alarming number of eclipse viewers flooding the market. Looking for the ISO 12312-2 Requirements is not enough as companies have started printing this on their fake viewers. The viewers also need to come from a reputable vendor. Here is a list compiled by the AAS.

And if your viewer is damaged, do not use it. Because Denver is not in the path of totality, you will need eye protection at *all* times
