Community College of Denver is Offering Free, Trustworthy Tax Help
IRS-Certified Volunteers will Prepare Taxes for Families Making $57,000 or Less

This tax season, Community College of Denver (CCD) is partnering with Tax Help Colorado, a program of Mile High United Way to offer hard-working families free tax preparation. Beginning January 29, IRS-certified volunteers will prepare and file tax returns free of charge to households with incomes of less than $57,000 a year.

Free tax prep helps ease the burden of commercial tax preparation costs on low-wage earners and helps connect families with valuable tax credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit, which is worth up to $6,700 for the 2021 tax year. On average, tax preparation in Colorado costs $200.

“It’s rare to have the opportunity to be part of a program with such a direct positive impact on our community,” said Brian Gilsdorf, associate professor of accounting for CCD. “Just as we have for the past 13 years, CCD is proud to be saving people money on tax preparation services and helping them get the best refund possible so they can make ends meet during a challenging time.”

This free service will be offered on Saturdays at Community College of Denver from January 29 through March 12 from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. in CCD’s Cherry Creek Building, room 202 located at 1111 West Colfax Avenue in Denver.

A list of all the Tax Help Colorado sites, as well as the locations of other free tax assistance sites in Colorado, are available by calling 2-1-1 or visiting TaxHelpCO.org.

For those who earn $72,000 or less, they can file their own taxes for free online at MyFreeTaxes.com.

Since its inception, Tax Help Colorado, along with the help of over 3,500 volunteers, has completed 95,500 returns resulting in $174 million in refunds for Coloradans.

About Mile High United Way

Mile High United Way was the very first United Way in the world. A group of visionaries including a Denver woman, priest, two ministers, and a rabbi, who believed there must be a better way to meet the needs of local people, came together on October 16, 1887, and formed what is known today as Mile High United Way. Today, United Way has 1,800 local chapters around the globe. Mile High United Way adopted the Tax Help Colorado program from its previous home at Gary Community Ventures in June 2021, based on a belief in the transformative impact that free tax preparation and access to valuable tax credits can have for the individuals, families, and communities we serve.
