A Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI) is a term used for a federal program designed to support a college or university in the United States that is eligible and has an enrollment of undergraduate full-time equivalent students that is at least 25 percent Hispanic at the end of the award year immediately preceding the date of application.
CCD was designated HSI by the U.S. Department of Education in 2001. The college earned this distinction because more than 30 percent of our students currently self-identify as Hispanic/Latinx. The benefits of this designation include eligibility for federal funds and grants that benefit our entire student population such as additional accelerated courses, computer labs, academic advisors, and other support services.
What does your Hispanic Heritage mean to you?
Victor Torres-Corona, Cybersecurity
My Hispanic Heritage means the most to me, coming from a Mexican family and being the first generation in the US from my family gives me a different perspective on two worlds and I am the connection between them. It's amazing to see how my heritage and culture empower me to do the best that I can. On top of that, there is a generational pressure to succeed for the past generations in my family and the future ones as well. I look at my heritage as the very foundation for my drive, dedication and determination to become what I want to be: a cyber security professional.
Paulina Guzman, Psychology
My Hispanic heritage is something that I carry with me everywhere I go. It’s my story. Although it’s only a small part of what defines who I am as a person, it has shaped my views and the path I have gone down. I pride deeply in my culture and most things that comes with it. I like to educate people and connect with people who are similar to me.
